K-POP Glossary: Essential Terms Every Fan Must Know

Hello! Welcome to K-POP-SONG BLOG.

Why a K-POP Glossary Matters

For newcomers to K-POP, the fandom culture can feel like a whole new universe. You might hear terms like “comeback,” “bias,” “maknae,” or “ARMY” and wonder what they actually mean. To long-time fans, these are second nature, but for beginners, they can be confusing.

K-POP is more than just music—it’s a lifestyle, a culture, and a community filled with unique expressions, traditions, and insider language. This glossary is your ultimate beginner’s guide to understanding K-POP lingo, helping you follow conversations, enjoy fan content, and feel truly part of the fandom.

Part I: Fan Identity Terms

1. Idol (아이돌)

In K-POP, an “idol” is a trained performer who sings, dances, and often acts or models. Idols are more than singers—they are multi-talented entertainers.

2. Bias (바이어스)

Your favorite member in a group. Fans often say “My bias is…” to show who they support the most.

3. Bias Wrecker (바이어스 레커)

A member who unexpectedly makes you question your bias. Example: You love Jisoo, but Lisa keeps stealing your attention—Lisa is your bias wrecker.

4. Maknae (막내)

The youngest member of the group. In K-POP culture, the maknae is often teased but adored by older members. Famous maknaes include Jungkook (BTS) and Lisa (BLACKPINK).

5. Fandom Names

Each fandom has its unique name.

  • BTS fans = ARMY

  • BLACKPINK fans = BLINK

  • TWICE fans = ONCE

  • EXO fans = EXO-L
Fandom names symbolize identity and unity.

Part II: Music and Promotion Terms

6. Comeback (컴백)

Unlike Western music, where an artist might release singles without special promotion, a “comeback” in K-POP means a full return with new songs, concept photos, music videos, and weeks of performances.

7. Title Track (타이틀 곡)

The main promotional song of an album. For example, BTS’s “DNA” and BLACKPINK’s “Kill This Love” are title tracks.

8. B-Side Track (수록곡)

Songs on the album that aren’t the title track. Often fan favorites and hidden gems.

9. Concept (컨셉)

The theme of a comeback—could be cute, dark, elegant, powerful, or experimental. BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” = fierce concept. TWICE’s “Cheer Up” = cute concept.

10. Stage/Performance (무대)

Promotions on weekly music shows in Korea (Music Bank, Inkigayo, M Countdown). These performances are critical to K-POP culture.

Part III: Fan Culture & Interaction

11. Fan Chant (응원법)

Coordinated cheers fans shout during live performances. Usually include members’ names in order and key phrases. Example: ARMY fan chants during “DNA.”

12. Fan Meeting (팬미팅)

Events where idols interact directly with fans—autographs, games, Q&A sessions.

13. Hi-Touch (하이터치)

Special events where fans get to high-five their idols. Popular in Japan and Korea.

14. Selca (셀카)

Short for “self-camera.” Essentially a selfie, but idols posting selcas for fans is a beloved tradition.

15. Lightstick (응원봉)

Official fanlight used at concerts. Each group has a unique design—BTS’s ARMY Bomb, BLACKPINK’s Hammer Bong.

Part IV: Online Fandom Language

16. Stan

Global slang meaning “to support or love” an idol/group. Example: “I stan BTS.”

17. K-Netz / I-Netz

K-Netz = Korean netizens (fans commenting online in Korea).
I-Netz = International fans (fans outside Korea).

18. All-Kill (올킬)

When a song tops all major Korean charts at the same time. A major achievement for any group.

19. Daesang (대상)

The grand prize at Korean music award shows. Winning a daesang is the highest honor for K-POP idols.

20. Sasaeng (사생팬)

An obsessive fan who invades idols’ privacy. Sasaeng behavior is dangerous and frowned upon in K-POP culture.
